FAQs

Frequent

Here are some common NDIS questions and answers, including how Albury Disability Support supports you

What is the NDIS and how does it work?

The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is an Australian government initiative providing funding and support to people with permanent and significant disabilities. Participants receive plans and funding tailored to their needs, allowing them to access essential and affordable services like therapy, assistive technology, and personal care.

The NDIS covers a range of supports for children, teens, adults and the elderly under three funding areas.

Core Supports

Daily living expenses, personal care, and community participation.

Capacity Building

Therapies including physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy to foster skills development and independent living. It also includes employment and education support.

Capital Supports

Assistive technology, home, and vehicle modifications.

The exact funding depends on the participant’s needs, as outlined in their personalised NDIS plan.

Who is eligible for NDIS funding?

To be eligible for NDIS support, individuals must:

  • Be under 65 years of age
  • Have a permanent and significant disability
  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa

Eligibility is determined through an application process, where individuals provide evidence of their disability and how it impacts their daily life.

How do I manage my NDIS plan?

You can manage your NDIS plan in three ways.

  1. NDIA-managed (the NDIS pays registered providers)
  2. Plan-managed (a plan manager handles payments and records)
  3. Self-managed (you control payments and providers)

If you choose to plan-manage, any management fees do not come out of your supports budget.

If you choose to self-manage, you will need to track your spending using budget tools, keep receipts for accountability, and review your plan annually or when needs change. If you need help, consider working with a support coordinator or plan manager for additional guidance.

How do I make changes to my NDIS plan?

NDIS plans are reviewed annually to ensure your plan still meets your needs. You can request changes to your NDIS plan by contacting the NDIS and asking for a plan review outside of the annual review cycle. To request an early review, provide supporting evidence, and work with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to update your goals and funding requirements.

How does the NDIS support community participation?

The NDIS funds activities and services that help participants engage with their community, such as social groups, skill-building workshops, recreational activities, and volunteer programs. These supports promote independence, social interaction, and personal growth, empowering participants to build relationships and actively participate in community life.

If these supports are part of your NDIS plan, we can help you access programs and support groups.
